4 Things I Do During My Toddler’s Naptime That Save My Sanity

Naptime is such a sacred part of the day for babies and toddlers. Naps support brain development, prevent overtired meltdowns, and give parents a much-needed reset. Our family is currently in the one-nap season, and that short window can feel like a race against the clock. Instead of running around frantically and getting nothing done, I’ve committed to four simple priorities each day that help me feel prepared and refreshed for the afternoon ahead.

Eat Lunch

The very first thing I do when naptime begins is eat. When we have lunch at home, I’m usually focused on preparing my toddler’s meal, keeping him engaged while he eats, cleaning up afterward, and then settling him down for a nap. By the time he’s asleep, I’m often starving. I always hope for a long nap, but if we hit a surprise sleep regression, I need to be fueled and ready to power through the rest of the day.

Run a Load of Dishes

Next, I gather up the morning dishes and start a load in the dishwasher. My goal is simple: clean water bottles, toddler plates, bowls, and highchair trays ready for afternoon snacks and dinner. Starting just one load makes the evening feel far less overwhelming.

Tidy One Thing

No matter what our morning holds, we usually begin with free play in the living room — milk for my toddler and coffee for Mom. Naturally, that space can get a little chaotic. I’ve learned I don’t need to deep clean during every nap, but walking away from a big mess stresses me out. My solution? Clean up just one thing. Maybe it’s stacking blocks, putting shapes back in the sorter, gathering puzzle pieces, or (let’s be honest) hiding that one extra-loud toy. Just one thing makes a big difference.

Sit Down for at Least 30 Minutes

This one is non-negotiable. I give myself at least 30 minutes to rest. I know this quiet time won’t last forever once naps are gone, so I’m choosing to appreciate it now. Sometimes I take a short nap. Sometimes I scroll my phone without guilt. Either way, it’s intentional time to recharge.

When I can accomplish these four things during naptime, I step into the afternoon feeling calm, prepared, and ready to play.

Sincerely,

Your Dallas Mom Friend
