It’s no secret that there are dozens of different swaddles: traditional blankets, zippers, Velcro, arms up, transitional, and more. It can be overwhelming to figure out which option is right for you and your baby. Our family tried out several different types throughout the different stages that the first year of life brought our son. Here are the three that we’ve transitioned through in year one.

Size: Small

Highlights:

  • 2-way zipper

  • 3-way adjustable design

  • Hospital recommended

When we left the hospital with our newborn, we thought we were so prepared with traditional swaddles and some very cute arms-up styles. As they say, best laid plans often go astray. We were very fortunate because the hospital had sent us home with a Halo SleepSack Swaddle. We realized quickly that this was the best fit for our newborn. The first week he was home, we ended up ordering four more of these swaddles to have on hand.

Size: 6-15 months

Highlights:

  • Lightly padded chest area (reversible for tummy sleepers)

  • Provides continuous support and comfort

  • Talk to your pediatrician first

Once our son was rolling independently, it came time to transition out of a true swaddle. And we were overwhelmed once again. This one swaddle was a big conversation in our home, so do what is right for your family, but we tested and loved this lightly-weighted sleep sack. Our son would play with or hold the weight as he fell asleep, and it seemed to soothe him through the transition to having his arms free.

Size: 18-36 months

Highlights:

  • Lasted (size-wise) until nearly two years old

  • 2-way zipper

  • Ultra soft material

Our longest-use sleep sack has been this one from AngelDear. The buttery-soft, breathable fabric feels incredibly gentle and has a great roomy design that has lasted from before his first birthday to nearly his second. The two-way zipper also makes middle-of-the-night diaper changes so much easier.

Every baby is different, and what worked beautifully for our son may not be the perfect fit for yours. Finding the right swaddle or sleep sack often takes a little trial and error, but once you find one that helps your baby sleep well, it's worth every penny. These three products carried us through nearly the entire first two years, each serving a different purpose as our son's sleep needs changed. I hope our experience helps make choosing the right sleep solution feel a little less overwhelming for your family!

Sincerely,

Your Dallas Mom Friend

Safe Sleep Reminder: Always follow the latest safe sleep recommendations from your pediatrician and the American Academy of Pediatrics, and discontinue swaddling as soon as your baby shows signs of rolling. Use each product only as directed by the manufacturer.
